The Delhi government is preparing to make accessing public services easier by allowing citizens to apply for key documents – including birth and caste certificates – directly through WhatsApp. The initiative is part of the government’s push to make governance more accessible, efficient, and entirely “faceless.” Also Read: OpenAI shuts down Sora: What happens to your videos now
Officials familiar with the matter said nearly 50 services across various departments have been identified for integration under the new system. Once rolled out, residents will no longer need to visit government offices or even use separate web portals – everything from applying to receiving documents will happen through WhatsApp. Also Read: Big update coming: Google Gemini may soon import ChatGPT chat history
The project, dubbed “Governance through WhatsApp,” will use artificial intelligence to handle citizen interactions. A bilingual chatbot – available in both Hindi and English – will guide users through the process. Applicants will be able to submit required documents, complete online payments, and track their applications within the chat itself. Also Read: ChatGPT ads coming soon: Who will see them and why
A senior government official said the Information Technology Department is leading the effort, building on the success of Delhi’s previous doorstep delivery model. “We are moving towards a more integrated and citizen-friendly approach where people can access essential services without any physical interface,” the official noted.
To ensure smooth operation, the system will include a real-time dashboard for monitoring and managing applications across departments. This will help reduce delays and improve accountability in the delivery process.
The government plans to bring in a technology partner to design and implement the WhatsApp-based platform. Once developed, the model could later be expanded to cover additional services and documents. This will make WhatsApp a one-stop solution for routine administrative tasks.
Delhi’s digital governance efforts are already among the most advanced in the country. This upcoming feature could make it even easier for residents to interact with government – anytime, anywhere – skipping long queues or paperwork.
