Google has expanded support for Google Docs’ voice typing feature. Earlier, Google Docs’ voice typing feature was available only on the company’s own web browser, that is, Chrome. But now, Google has made the voice typing feature available on Microsoft’s Edge and Apple’s Safari web browsers.
In addition to this, Google is also bringing support for Google Slides’ Automatic Captions feature to Edge and Safari. Just like Google Docs’ voice typing, this feature too was available only on Google Chrome.
“Users can also turn on automatic captions to display the speakers’ words in real time while presenting in Slides,” Google wrote in a blog post.
“When a user turns on voice typing or captions, the web browser controls the speech-to-text service, determines how speech is processed, and then sends text data to Google Docs and Google Slides,” the company added.
Google Docs voice typing feature lets users add text to a sheet simply by speaking. As Google explains it, when users turn on voice typing, the web browser that they are using will take over the controls the speech-to-text service. It will then determine how a user’s speech is processed and send the text to Google Docs. Simply put, once you turn on this feature, Chrome, Edge or Safari will analyse your speech and then send it Google Docs.
This feature can not only be used for typing but also for transcribing and it supports hundreds of languages and accents. Indian users can use this feature in nine languages, which include — Bengali (India), English (India), Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil (India), Urdu (India). You can check other supported languages here.
