The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is preparing to roll out a new feature that will let users update the mobile number linked to their Aadhaar directly from their smartphones. This will remove the need to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre, fill out physical forms, or wait in queues for verification. UIDAI confirmed the development through an announcement on X, saying users will soon be able to make changes “from the comfort of your home.” Also Read: New Aadhaar App Rolls Out For Android And iOS: Key Features Explained
To keep the process secure, UIDAI will rely on a two-step digital verification system. Users will first receive an OTP on either their existing or new mobile number. After that, they will need to complete face authentication using the in-built tool in the Aadhaar app. Also Read: Aadhaar Cards Set For Major Tech Overhaul With AI, Blockchain, And Quantum Security
UIDAI has said the goal is to make the update process simpler without weakening security. With face authentication and OTP-based verification, users will not need to submit any physical documents or visit a centre. The authority also highlighted that this change will eliminate the need for in-person verification, which is currently mandatory for mobile number updates. At present, updating the mobile number linked to Aadhaar can only be done at authorised centres, since identity verification is required. This has been a challenge, especially for senior citizens, people with disabilities, and residents in remote areas where enrolment centres are limited.
The new at-home update option is expected to make the process much more convenient. Users will be able to complete the entire procedure on their phones in just a few steps once the feature goes live.
While the feature is not available yet, UIDAI has advised users to download the Aadhaar app on Android or iOS in advance. Once the update rolls out, users will be able to update their mobile numbers using their Aadhaar details, the new mobile number, and face authentication directly through the app.
