Motorola will soon launch a new smartphone in India with a wooden back. In the latest teaser, the Lenovo-owned smartphone company has confirmed the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is coming to India, however, without revealing a launch date. The Edge 50 Ultra debuted in April in select European markets with top-end features and a wooden back for a more premium finish.
The upcoming Edge 50 Ultra will use a back panel made of wood. Apart from giving the phone a unique look, the wooden back panel gives off a subtle musky fragrance, which might appeal to customers. Motorola has not said what tree that wood is from. Although ditching polycarbonate materials could be seen as a good move towards environment friendliness, environment advocates could argue using wood on a phone promotes felling of trees on a mass scale. Fortunately, the company has not received any negative feedback for the wooden design in Europe so far.
The Edge 50 Ultra arrived in some European markets earlier this year. It uses specifications such as a 6.67-inch curved pOLED display with a 2712×1220-pixel resolution, a 144Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. The panel also supports HDR10+ and a fingerprint sensor, while Corning Gorilla Glass Victus ensures its protection. Powering the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is a Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor, coupled with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage. There is no support for a microSD card on the phone and it runs Android 14-based Hello UI.
For photography, the Edge 5o Ultra uses a 50MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support. It is accompanied by another 50MP ultrawide camera and a 64MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra packs a 4500mAh battery that charges at up to 125W speed through a wire and 50W speed wirelessly.
The Edge 50 Ultra was launched in Europe for a starting price of EUR 999. This translates to roughly Rs 88,900. While the Indian price will be announced on the launch day, we can assume it will be slightly less than the European price.
