When CMF announced the Phone 2 Pro, I was genuinely confused. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect from it as CMF is known for bringing more budget-focussed devices. But once I got my hands on the device, I was blown away by the value it offers. The CMF Phone 2 Pro is almost like a dream device for anyone looking for a phone under Rs 20,000. Of course, everything that glitters isn’t gold. Yes, the phone does cut a few corners, but are they really deal-breakers? Let’s dive into the full review of the CMF Phone 2 Pro and find out. The design of the CMF Phone 2 feels fresh and brings some variety in looks as well. It comes in four colours: Black, Light Green, White, and Orange. The White and Orange stand out as they come with a dual finish, adding more character to the phone. The back still has a design similar to that of the CMF Phone 1, but this time, CMF has made a huge change. The back is now not removable. This actually takes away the main USP of the CMF phones, as the Phone 1 established that future devices could continue the tradition of a swappable back. This added more variety for the customer, as they could swap out the back of their phone, giving a completely new look to their device. Rather, now CMF has introduced a universal cover that attaches to the back case. This universal cover can now be used to attach all accessories and swap back panels. This feels more like a compromise than an integrated feature of the device. But, CMF has also introduced new accessories like a fisheye and macro lens along with a MagSafe wallet. The lanyard accessory is still there, and all this gives the phone a unique experience.
But, one place where the device doesn’t feel like a compensation is its build. Although the Phone 2 Pro is made of plastic, it still feels great. It is lightweight and sleek even after packing a large 5000mAh battery. To give an idea, the device is just 7.8mm thin and the phone weighs just around 185g. Even with this lightness, the phone still feels very sturdy and durable. Adding to its durability, CMF has stepped up its game and provided an IP54 rating that can easily handle water splashes.
Nonetheless, the overall design and build is great and users who want to experiment with their phones can separately buy the universal back cover and give their phone a unique twist according to themselves.
Coming to the display side, the CMF Phone 2 Pro gives one of the brightest displays in the segment. The CMF Phone 2’s display shines bright at a peak brightness of 3000 nits. The display is great to use for watching content and consuming all multimedia. It is also bright enough outdoors, so visibility under direct sunlight is not an issue. In day-to-day usage as well, the display feels really smooth as it supports a 120Hz high refresh rate. Along with this high refresh rate, the large AMOLED 6.77-inch panel makes the device a delight to use. It remains bright even outdoors. The display is also Widevine L1 certified, so all the users can enjoy Netflix and Prime in the best quality possible.
The bezels on the display are also symmetrical and give the display a fine look. The only small downside is that the bezels are a little noticeable. But, considering the price point at which this phone comes, this display surely gives tough competition to all the phones in this range.
Another hit that the Phone 2 takes is that it only gives a single speaker. These days, dual stereo speakers have become a norm even in the sub-Rs 20,000 range. This means multimedia consumption could take a hit. Although the single speaker is loud enough, it often sounds muddy, which could potentially spoil the movie and video binging experience. CMF could have used a better quality mono speaker to make sure that the overall multimedia experience is enhanced, as their display is really great. But not complementing it with a good speaker means that the experience is not the best.
Now, let’s talk about the key ingredient of all devices, the processor. The processor used in the CMF Phone 2 Pro is a MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro. This processor is great, as it performs well in day-to-day tasks. It feels like a well-optimized processor, and along with the clean Nothing OS, it blazes throughout and even provides a great multitasking experience. The Nothing OS is also bloat-free and gives a very minimal experience. The best part is that Nothing has made sure they don’t cut corners here and give the full version of its OS even in their more budget-focussed devices. To complement the power of the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Pro, the phone comes with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB UFS 2.2 storage.
Talking about some benchmarks, the Phone 2 Pro scores around 6,89,998 in the AnTuTu benchmark, 2,889 in the multi-core, and 1,010 in the single-core Geekbench 6. Even in the throttling test, the device performed decently and slightly touched 38°C, but it was never uncomfortably warm to hold. The phone also performs well in gaming and can handle all high games like BGMI and COD with ease at medium settings. Just make sure the performance toggle is turned on to push the device and get the best out of it.
Coming back to the Nothing OS 3.2 that is based on Android 15, the CMF Phone 2 Pro also brings a cool new feature. The feature, called Essential Space, is accessible via the physical Essential Key. This key is present just below the power button. It lets you store notes, screenshots, and voice recordings in one place. It’s certainly an interesting feature, but it can sometimes cause a bit of inconvenience because of its placement. Initially, I had to juggle a lot between this Essential Key and the power button. The placement feels a little odd. Even though Nothing has given a different texture to this button, with a case on, it becomes really difficult to differentiate between the power button and the Essential Key.
All in all, the feature is useful for productivity-driven users who can store their important notes in a separate space, and just the placement alone of the Essential Key can make it a handy tool.
Now coming to the biggest highlight of the CMF Phone 2 Pro. The Phone 2 Pro comes with a triple camera setup, which is rare to see in this price range. It features a 50 MP main sensor, a 50 MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom (20x digital), and an 8 MP ultra-wide angle camera. For selfies, there’s a 16 MP front-facing camera. CMF did a first in this segment by giving a telephoto lens, and just a small spoiler, it’s actually good.
While using the camera, I found the main camera to be pretty good and it clicks some solid photos. The primary camera captures some solid shots with colours and details right on point. The colours feel close to natural with a hint of saturation. This makes all the photos look really eye pleasing and social media ready. A handy feature that I found was the presets in the camera app. There are multiple presets that make photography fun. By default, there is a soft focus, ultra-wide, beach, and black & white filter preset. Users can also create their own presets to quickly snap shots at their preferred settings. Even the telephoto lens does a great job with zoom shots. The colours and consistency are there, and the background separation is great as well.
The ultra-wide angle, on the other hand, takes a hit. It does capture decent photos but falls behind in terms of details. While it doesn’t have the colour richness of the main lens, it still clicks good photos under good lighting. In lower lighting, it does struggle, and the photos get a little noisy.
Coming to the front, the selfie camera takes fair clicks. It is perfect for clicking portrait mode selfies as the edge detection is great. Under good lighting, it also keeps the skin tones very close to natural, while capturing great details as well. In the video department, the phone is at par with the competition as it captures 4K videos at 30fps.
The video capabilities are also at par with the competition. The phone can capture up to 4K video at 30fps. While capturing videos, users can switch between the telephoto and main lens, but there is no option to switch to the ultra-wide. The quality of the videos is decent, and it captures colours and details well with a wide dynamic range.
The battery life on the Phone 2 Pro is quite great. With a large 5000mAh battery, the phone easily pulls off a full day on moderate to heavy use. Sometimes it can also last a little more depending upon your usage. It comes with a 33W charger in the box, and charging the phone from 0 to 100% takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. It’s not the fastest, but it gets the job done without fuss.
Considering the sleek form factor, this device really excels in the battery department, and with the well-optimised and minimal Nothing OS, even power users can easily expect a day’s battery life.
The CMF Phone 2 Pro punches way above its weight in multiple areas. The display is crisp and provides a great experience, and even the performance is decent for daily usage, handling casual gaming as well. The phone also gives great camera performance for its segment and is a perfect device for someone looking for good phone-mile photography under Rs 20,000. The phone has some shortcomings like a mono speaker that could have been better and a weaker ultra-wide camera. But nonetheless, it still offers a well-balanced experience for anyone looking for a great all-round device under Rs 20,000.
