The iPhone is one of the best smartphones money can buy. That is because it packs the most advanced features and is usually led by the cutting-edge technologies in the smartphone industry. But Apple wants the iPhone to do more now. A new report has suggested that Apple is bullish on developing foldable devices, including an iPhone that can fold.
According to a report by Economic Daily, the company is reportedly planning to introduce more than one foldable device, meaning there may also be a foldable iPad in the pipeline. The first foldable product — whatever it may be, however, will not arrive before 2025. The new report corroborates several previous reports on Apple’s plans to finally enter the foldable market. Most of them have talked about a flip mechanism for the iPhone and a folding mechanism for the iPad. A few earlier leaks have even said that Apple may gauge the interest in a folding device by introducing a foldable iPad before an iPhone.
Apple focuses on what its customers want more than what it needs. For years, Apple has not experimented with how its devices look, even though its rivals, such as Samsung and Google, caught up with the market trend and pushed out their foldable devices. Particularly in China, Apple faces stiff competition from the behemoth Huawei, as well as Samsung, thanks to their diverse portfolio of devices. Even though the iPhone has continued to maintain its position in the market as a premium device, customers have often criticised it for not being innovative any longer.
According to an ITHome report, Apple saw a decline in iPhone shipments and the biggest factor behind that was the sales of foldable devices from Samsung and Huawei. This could nudge Apple towards making a foldable device sooner than it planned. A previous report from well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple wants its foldable device to offer a superior user experience compared to existing ones. Thus, the delay. Last month, The Information reported Apple finalised two prototypes for its flip-style iPhone models with an outer display. However, what exactly the foldable iPhone would look like is something only time will tell.
