Amazon has officially confirmed a major round of job cuts – roughly 14,000 corporate roles. Beth Galetti, Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology at Amazon, said in a press release that the company continues to reorganise and lean more into artificial intelligence (AI). The announcement comes months after CEO Andy Jassy had hinted that AI would likely change how the company operates – and that fewer people might be needed for some roles. According to Beth Galetti, Amazon’s Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, the decision is part of a larger plan to simplify operations and invest more heavily in areas that matter most to the company’s future. In a blog post, Galetti said the goal is to “reduce layers, cut bureaucracy, and shift resources” toward Amazon’s biggest priorities. She added that AI is transforming the way businesses work – allowing them to innovate faster than before. That means while some traditional roles are being eliminated, Amazon also plans to hire in key strategic areas over the next year. Reports suggest that the job cuts will impact multiple departments – including logistics, cloud computing (AWS), payments, and gaming. The reductions represent around 4% of Amazon’s global corporate workforce, which stands at about 350,000 employees. Most of Amazon’s overall workforce – more than 1.5 million people worldwide – are warehouse and operations staff, who are not directly affected by this round. This isn’t the first time Amazon has trimmed its workforce. The company previously laid off around 27,000 employees between late 2022 and early 2023, following a pandemic hiring spree. Amazon has said it will provide severance packages and transition support for those affected. “For our teammates who are unable to find a new role at Amazon or who choose not to look for one, we’ll offer them transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits, and more,” Amazon mentioned.
