Popular Indian telecom operator Airtel faced a major service outage on Monday (August 18), leaving thousands of users across India unable to make calls or use mobile data. The outage, which spiked in the afternoon, affected several users in metro cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. Frustrated customers took to social media platforms and flooded them with complaints, ranging from mobile data failure to complete loss of network signal. According to outage tracking website Downdetector, reports of Airtel’s network issues crossed 3,500 complaints at around 4 PM. Complaints on the platform indicated that most problems were linked to mobile phone services (74%), followed by no signal (15%) and mobile internet issues (11%). Several Airtel subscribers took to social media and community forums to report issues, citing disruptions even after recharges. Many claimed that their SIM cards couldn’t connect to the internet, while others noted extended periods of outage in Airtel’s 4G services. The network outage affected users dependent on Airtel’s network for remote work.
Acknowledging the issue, Airtel issued a statement on social media – “We are currently experiencing a network outage, our team is actively working to resolve the issue and restore services promptly. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.”
While the company did not mention the exact cause of the network disruption, the operator assured that restoration efforts are underway. The outage highlights the growing dependence on internet and mobile network, where even a short downtime can affect the workflow for several users.
