iPhone 17 Pro To Feature A Smaller Dynamic Island Than iPhone 16 Pro? What We Know So Far

The Dynamic Island, introduced in 2022 with the iPhone 14 Pro, might be in for a design update. If recent rumours are true, Apple could finally be shrinking the size of the pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 17 Pro models. The current version, which measures about 2cm wide on the iPhone 16 Pro, might get trimmed down to 1.5cm – a 25% reduction, a rumour suggested.

This update comes from a source who reportedly works at a screen protector company. While the tipster’s track record is unclear, the leak has again started a discussion which was going earlier this year but faded with several other upgrades. 

Why Apple May Reduce Dynamic Island Size?

One of the earlier speculations this year was that Apple might switch to a “metalens” setup – a more compact optical solution for Face ID components. These lenses are thinner and smaller than traditional ones, which could allow Apple to reduce the cutout size without compromising functionality.

A smaller Dynamic Island could give you more usable screen space, especially since Apple isn’t yet ready to move Face ID sensors under the display. Interestingly, there were also opposing reports suggesting that the size of the Dynamic Island might stay the same for the iPhone 17, with only software tweaks planned. But with this new leak – and Apple’s big September 9 event around the corner – the timing seems ideal for a surprise.

Paired with rumours of slimmer bezels and a possible camera bar design, the iPhone 17 Pro could look noticeably different from the 16 Pro.

iPhone 17 Pro: What Else We Know

Apart from this, the iPhone 17 Pro and the Pro Max are expected to go through a major design shift this year. A dual-tone design and a larger-rectangular camera island at the back with a triple camera setup may change what we have seen with the Pro models in the past couple of years. 

Talking about the specs, it may get a powerful A19 Pro chip, a new 48MP telephoto lens, a 24MP selfie camera for the first time and a larger battery.
