Apple has some recommendations on what should not do with your wet iPhone.

Story Highlights

  • It is common for your iPhone to get accidental water splashes.
  • But the common practices to dry it could be harmful to the iPhone.
  • Apple has advised against using those methods to dry the iPhone.

I love using my iPhone. It is fast, super trendy, and helps me do things in a jiffy. That is also why I am very cautious about the way I handle it, which is mostly with utmost care. However, I accidentally dropped my iPhone 15 Pro into a swimming pool at a recent family gathering. After the sudden reaction to the incident, I began thinking of a series of steps to ensure the iPhone was okay. However, Apple advises against doing some of them for your iPhone.

After quickly picking up the iPhone from the bottom of the swimming pool, I started steps to remove water from the iPhone by wiping it dry with a cloth. During all of this, I knew my iPhone was IP68 rated for water resistance. That means it can survive if doused in no more than a 1.5-metre-long pool of water for 30 minutes. Thankfully, the pool my iPhone fell into matched with requisite, yet I was a bit concerned. I wanted to immediately put the iPhone in a bag of rice. Apple, however, says no to that common practice, among other things.

Things Apple says you should and should not do with a wet iPhone

— Do not put it in a bag of rice. Immersing a phone or some other gadget when wet is the most popular hack everywhere, but we may unknowingly harm our devices by doing that. Apple has advised against using rice to soak dry a wet iPhone because it could allow tiny rice particles to enter the device and damage it.

— Unplug all the cables and do not charge your iPhone until it is dry again. According to Apple, charging your wet iPhone or using accessories might damage your iPhone irreversibly. Let the iPhone dry first, which may take about five hours. In case your iPhone needs some juice during the time its ports are drying, you can use wireless charging. Apple has a suggestion even for that: wipe off your iPhone with a soft, lint-free cloth before putting it on a wireless charger.

— If the speakers are muffled, place your iPhone, speaker side down, on a lint-free cloth and see if water drips out. You have to let the iPhone dry naturally. Blowing into the iPhone’s speaker helps to remove stationary water droplets inside.
