Updating your Aadhaar-linked mobile number no longer requires standing in long queues or finding the nearest enrolment centre. UIDAI has rolled out a new update to the Aadhaar app that finally allows users to change their mobile number from home using simple OTP and face authentication. Here’s how the feature works and what else you should know.

UIDAI’s updated Aadhaar app now includes a live “Mobile Number Update” option that lets residents update the number linked to their Aadhaar directly from their smartphone.

The new process is meant to help users who struggle with physical visits-whether because of distance, health issues, or busy schedules. The update is available on both Android and iOS, as long as the app is updated to the latest version.

How To Change Your Aadhaar Mobile Number Online: Step Here

Here’s how to update your Aadhaar-linked phone number using the latest Aadhaar app:

  • First of all, go to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and install/ update the official Aadhaar app.
  • Then, open the app and tap ‘Mobile Number Update.’ This option now appears right on the home screen.
  • The app will send an OTP to your new number for verification.
  • After that, complete your face authentication. You’ll be asked to scan your face for identity confirmation. This step replaces the earlier centre-based biometric verification.
  • Once verified, the updated number gets recorded in UIDAI’s database. That’s it! No paperwork or centre visit required.

What Can’t Be Updated Online Yet?

Inside the app, you may also see options to update Name, Address, and Email. However, these sections are not fully live for self-update yet. For now, the following still require an enrolment centre:

  • Fingerprint/biometric updates
  • Iris scan
  • Photo updates
  • Date of birth corrections

These changes require in-person equipment and verification.

What Are The New UIDAI Rule For Aadhaar Verification

UIDAI has also introduced a new rule requiring organisations to register before they use Aadhaar for customer verification.

This particularly applies to Hotels, Event venues, and Businesses that collect photocopies of Aadhaar. The aim is to prevent misuse of stored Aadhaar data and encourage QR-code–based digital verification aligned with India’s data protection framework.
