After years of teases, CD Projekt RED has confirmed Cyberpunk 2. This project was codenamed Project Orion and has now officially entered pre-production. The update dropped on X (formerly Twitter) on May 28. This is a huge announcement, as fans have been asking for a sequel to Cyberpunk for a long time now. Project Orion was first announced back in October 2022 as part of CDPR’s ambitious roadmap. This included multiple titles, such as new Witcher games and this Cyberpunk sequel. This project is especially notable as it’s being developed by a new North American studio in Boston. The team will closely collaborate with the core Cyberpunk developers, likely bringing next-level madness for gamers. According to CD Projekt RED, the goal with Cyberpunk 2 is to showcase the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe. This will be interesting to watch, especially since the studio faced massive backlash during the launch of Cyberpunk 2077.

Now that the project is in pre-production, the team is working on early game systems and prototyping core mechanics. This is the phase where the creative building blocks start coming together. It will be interesting to see how the gameplay design and story differ from its predecessor and what new elements the game brings to this neon world.

A bit of good news that might give fans some relief is that the sequel is being built in Unreal Engine 5. Unlike Cyberpunk 2077, which used CDPR’s proprietary RED engine, this shift could bring more stability and cutting-edge visuals to the gameplay.

Cyberpunk 2 Release Date

Right now, the game has just entered pre-production, and there is no tentative release date from the studio. So, as of now, we can’t expect Night City 2.0 anytime soon. Since the sequel has only just begun development, it could take years to even reach its early stages.
