Apple Vision Pro may soon see a rival from Samsung.

Story Highlights

  • Samsung may be working on an Apple Vision Pro-like headset.
  • It may offer extended reality, a combination of virtual and augmented realities.
  • A report has claimed the Samsung's headset may launch sometime in March.

Samsung could be planning to enter the headset market once again with a Vision Pro-like mixed-reality headset. Launched back in February, the Vision Pro is Apple’s high-end mixed or extended reality headset with advanced features such as spatial computing and immersive audio and video experiences. While it may not be the first such device, it certainly is among the most important for disrupting the headset industry. Now, Samsung is apparently following in Apple’s footsteps with its extended reality headset.

A MyDrivers report has claimed Samsung’s in-development headset is internally codenamed ‘Moohan’. Its first developer version may become available for testers in October, while the commercial release may take place in March 2025. That could mean Samsung’s new mixed-reality headset may arrive alongside the Galaxy S25 series next year. The report said the sale may also begin in March next year.

Samsung’s Vision Pro rival may use two 1.03-inch OLED displays with 2500×2500-pixel resolution each and a pixel density of 3500 PPI. They may have a maximum 90Hz refresh rate. The headset may be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and feature 12 built-in cameras. While it is unclear whether Samsung will use Android or Tizen for headset’s ecosystem, it may offer experiences similar to the Vision Pro. For reference, Apple Vision Pro has 1.41-inch displays with 3660×3200-pixel resolution and a 3386 PPI pixel density. It uses an Apple M2 and an R1 chip with 16GB of unified memory.

The upcoming Samsung mixed reality headset, however, will not be the company’s first. Samsung’s Gear VR devices were among the first to offer a virtual reality experience before the company shifted to Meta’s Oculus platform. Eventually, Samsung discontinued its virtual reality headsets as the demand slowed down.

According to the report, Samsung’s upcoming extended reality headset will cost about CNY 10,000, roughly Rs 1,15,260. Apple sells the Vision Pro for $3,499, approximately Rs 2,92,660. While Apple has not yet launched the Vision Pro headset in India, Samsung is also unlikely to introduce its headset in India.
