UPI payments in India have transformed the way we handle money. From small vendors to lakhs of transactions, digital payments emerged as one of the simplest and easiest ways to deal with money. Ever since UPI was introduced in India, the service has been available to everyone with a smartphone. It played a key role in boosting India’s economy.

However, a new report indicates that National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is exploring a new method that could allow users to approve transactions using just biometrics or face ID, and hence entering the PIN before making payment will become optional.

UPI Payments via Biometric: Is PIN System Getting Replaced

As per report from Economic Times, UPI payments in India might be getting a big upgrade soon. As per recent reports, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is trying to implement a biometric system to transfer money. This upcoming new method will reportedly allow users to approve transactions with the help of biometrics of face ID. This means there will be no use of entering four or six digit PIN.

If implemented, this would mean users could complete payments using fingerprint scans or facial recognition instead of entering their 4 to 6-digit UPI PIN each time. This step aims to make digital transactions even faster, easier, and more secure for millions of users across the country.

How Current UPI system Works?

Currently, when you make the payment through any UPI app including Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM, you need to enter your ix or four digit PIN. This PIN is entered to confirm the money transaction. The UPI PIN works like a secret code without which you won’t be able to transfer money. Additionally, it verifies your identity and prevents anybody else to make unauthorized payments.

What Could Change with Biometric UPI?

If the plan of bringing a biometric system in the UPI payments move forward then it could change the overall system of how UPI works in India. This means, now users may son hve the option to use their fingerprint or face ID in order to approve their transactions.

One of the most important things to consider here is that report indicates that it might be an optional feature and hence giving users the choice to stick with the traditional PIN or switch to biometric verifications.
