AI-Powered Siri: Why the Delay?

Siri’s upgrade has faced multiple setbacks. Initially, it was expected to launch in late 2024, however, it was later pushed to Spring 2025 and it is delayed again till 2026 Spring. The main reason behind the delay seems to be technical complications and quality issues. Apple executives Craig Federighi and Greg Joswiak have recently explained the reason behind the delay. According to Craig, Siri “didn’t converge in the way that it needed to” be. He simply referred to it in terms of quality.  news Also Read: WhatsApp For iOS Gets A Fresh Liquid Glass Makeover Inspired By iOS 26

Another important factor is that Apple had split Siri into two systems in iOS 18: one for basic tasks and another for AI-powered features. Merging them proved to be tricky, with bugs and performance issues forcing the team to go back to the drawing board.

There were also reported tensions between Apple’s AI developers and its marketing team. While developers blamed marketing for setting unrealistic expectations, marketing pointed to timelines shared by engineering.

Why Is It Special?

This isn’t just a minor update. The advanced Siri is part of Apple’s major aim towards Artificial Intelligence. What will be special with the advanced Siri? The new Siri is expected to offer better contextual understanding, more natural responses, and tighter integration with apps through a system called App Intents.

It aims to use on-device data and what’s currently on-screen to tailor replies—making Siri more helpful in daily tasks. Apple has promised a more intuitive and responsive assistant, capable of handling not just simple tasks, but more complex, app-level actions.
