The report further added that these apps are accused to display predatory behaviour that can trap users in massive debt. They can even be misused as tools for “espionage and propaganda, besides posing a security risk to the data of the Indian citizens”.

Since the start of political tension with China in 2020 following a border clash, India has banned popular Chinese apps in the country including TikTok and WeChat Messenger.

Almost six months ago, the Union Home Ministry started its analysis of 288 Chinese loan-lending apps. This analysis revealed that only 94 of them were available on e-stores and others were working on third-party links.

It was reported that the Central Intelligence agencies and Telangana, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh had requested the Home Ministry to take strict action against such apps.

India last year blocked access to several Chinese mobile apps citing security concerns, which was followed by China expressing concerns over bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
