Apple’s long-rumoured foldable iPhone might take longer to arrive than expected. A new report suggests that the company has delayed its first foldable model to 2027 as it continues to work on the phone’s complex hinge and display design. The update comes from Japan’s Mizuho Securities, as reported by Korean outlet The Elec. Apple was earlier said to be planning mass production in the second half of 2026, likely to coincide with the iPhone 18 lineup. However, internal development challenges have now reportedly pushed that schedule by several months, with the foldable expected to debut in 2027 – possibly alongside the iPhone 18e. Apple is reportedly approaching its first foldable device with caution, prioritising the durability and longevity of the hinge and display layer. These two components are among the trickiest to perfect in any foldable device, and Apple reportedly wants to avoid early-stage design flaws that could affect usability. Mizuho Securities has also revised its panel production estimates for Apple’s foldable model. The forecast has been revised down from roughly 13 million panels to 9 million, suggesting a slower start to manufacturing. Initial shipments are said to be between 5 million and 7 million units when it is ready to launch into the market.
The report stated that the device will feature a 7.8-inch inner LTPO OLED display, utilising Color filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology for higher brightness and thinner panels. The outer display could measure around 5.5 inches that will allow quick interactions without the need to unfold.
Samsung Display is said to remain Apple’s exclusive supplier for the OLED panels, thereby solidifying the companies’ long-standing relationship. Pricing is expected over $2,000, aligning it in similar pricing categories of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold devices.
