Apple to Bring Satellite Communication to Its Smartwatch Next Year: Report

Apple is planning to bring Satellite Communications to its Smartwatch next year. As per the Bloomberg report, Apple’s Ultra Watch could feature satellite communication next year. The feature is said to allow people to make calls and send messages even without an internet or cellular connection. The report further claims it will help users monitor their blood pressure and also be helpful to health-conscious people, especially hikers.

To recall, Apple began to roll out its satellite communication feature through its iPhones in 2022. The tech giant invested more than $1.5 billion in a company named  Globalstar, which is a global satellite service provider, responsible for the expansion of iPhone communication services. In 2022 Apple will support Emergency SOS via satellite for iPhone 14 models.

The satellite communication that came with iPhone 14 models is also equipped with a Crash Detection technique that can detect a severe car crash and automatically dial emergency services when a user is unconscious or unable to reach their iPhone. The feature will immediately work when an iPhone user makes an emergency SOS via satellite request. The message will then be received by the Globalstar’s 24 satellites which are traveling at a speed of approximately 16,000 mph. After the satellite receives the message, it will send it to the custom ground stations available all over the world.

However, people like hikers and sports enthusiasts will have to carry their iPhones to use this feature. In 2024 Apple also upgraded this feature and now it allows people to send messages even via iMessage. Nevertheless, Apple has not yet confirmed anything about launching a new smartwatch in 2025 with satellite communications. But we can still hope to see an upgraded version of the current Apple watch available in the market.
