As WWDC (Worldwide Developer’s Conference) 2024 nears, more information about Apple’s iOS 18, iPhones, and generative AI features emerge. This time, Apple is said to have begun talks with ChatGPT maker, OpenAI. By now it’s clear that Apple is serious about bringing AI features on iPhones via iOS 18. These discussions may materialize into an AI chatbot on iPhones. Additionally, Apple is also developing its own large language models to bring some on-device features. According to Bloomberg, Apple has resumed discussions with OpenAI to use its technology to power new features on iPhones launching later this year. Apple is also reportedly in talks with Alphabet Inc.’s Google for licensing the company’s Gemini chatbot. However, neither Apple nor Google have confirmed any such discussions. That said, the plans may change anytime. Also Read: Apple’s First Foldable iPhone May Now Arrive In 2027: Here’s Why
Other than OpenAI and Google, Apple also had discussions with AI startup Antropic earlier this year. That said, Apple appears to be way more serious about AI than we expected.
In addition to this, there’s major news about Apple’s next operating system iOS 18. The upcoming operations system’s new features will likely be based on Apple’s in-house large language model. One of such features could be AI software that generates human-sounding texts. While Apple is developing such a feature, it continues to seek partners to power a chatbot-like feature similar to ChatGPT, as reported by the publication.
As of now, it’s unclear what exact AI features it will bring with iOS 18, but on-device features sound interesting. Other than AI, iOS 18 may also bring some other notable changes such as an improved Siri and home screen customization. Apple may finally allow users to customize their home screen layout, which means you may be able to place icons anywhere on the screen.
Further, there may be some updates to the Safari browser and iMessage features, including RCS support. There could also be some visual changes. We will learn more about iOS 18 at the WWDC event that begins on June 10, 2024.
Apple scheduled another event called Let loose, which could be for upcoming iPad models. We are expected to see at least two new iPads at the event. The special event is scheduled almost a month before WWDC on May 7. You can learn more about the event here.
