Foldable iPhone: What should we expect?
Apple’s first-ever foldable has been part of leaks and rumours for over a year so far. However, the final word from the tech giant is yet to be awaited. The question is still hanging in doubt — when will the first iPhone foldable phone be launched? As per a renowned Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple supplier Foxconn is expected to begin work on the foldable iPhone later this year. That means if you are waiting to have a glimpse of it with the iPhone 17 series launch later this year, then you need to hold your excitement. He further suggested that many components of the foldable iPhone, such as the hinge, are yet to be finalised. “The foldable display is one of the few components with finalised specifications and serves as a good reference for estimating potential shipments,” he added. The analyst suggests that the foldable iPhone may launch in 2026 along with a hefty price tag. That means we’re still over a year away, but the wheels seem to be in motion. The foldable screen will be made by Samsung Display, which is gearing up to produce 7 to 8 million flexible panels annually, the tipster added. However, since actual production might only last a few months in 2026, the number of foldable iPhones shipped that year could be lower than this capacity. Apple is said to have ordered 15 to 20 million units, but not all will be sold in the first year. Instead, the company seems to be planning a gradual rollout over two to three years, with about 3 to 5 million units expected in 2026 and more in the following years. This could be possible due to the phone’s expected premium pricing.
Early reports suggest a book-style foldable design. When folded, it may offer a 5.5-inch outer display, and when opened, a 7.8-inch inner screen. The phone is also said to come with a metal hinge, possibly a titanium frame, and an ultra-slim build that measures under 5mm when unfolded. Other expected features include a side-mounted Touch ID sensor and a dual-camera setup.
If all goes according to plan, the foldable iPhone could launch in fall 2026 — possibly alongside the iPhone 18 lineup. However, Apple’s plans are still evolving, and there could be changes along the way.
