Sony has unveiled its first dedicated device for remote play of PlayStation 5 games, the PlayStation Portal remote player. The device, which will launch later this year for $199.99, features an eight-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution at 60fps, and controllers that mimic the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.
The PlayStation Portal will allow gamers to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi from their console to the handheld device, without requiring a TV or monitor. The device will also support media playback from the PS5 home screen. However, it will not support PS VR2 games or games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium's cloud service.
Sony claims that the PlayStation Portal will provide a high-definition visual experience and a swift transition from playing on the PS5 to the handheld device. The device will also have a 3.5mm audio jack for wired headphones, but it will not support Bluetooth.
Along with the PlayStation Portal, Sony also announced two new wireless audio products that use a proprietary technology called PlayStation Link, which is designed to deliver low latency, lossless audio from the PS5 and the PlayStation Portal. The products are the Pulse Elite wireless headset and the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds, both of which will come with a USB adapter for connecting to the PS5.
The Pulse Elite wireless headset will offer a retractable boom mic with AI-enhanced noise rejection, and a charging hanger for convenient storage. The Pulse Explore wireless earbuds will have an ergonomic design and touch controls for adjusting volume and accessing voice assistants.
