Google Pay, or GPay, works differently in India. Started as Google Tez, the app initially focused on Unified Payments Interface (UPI) based payments. It is one of the leading UPI-based apps, but Google later rolled out support for credit and debit cards in the app, allowing users more payment options. To set up those options, customers first need to have the GPay app on their Android phone or iPhone. GPay usually comes pre-installed on Android phones, while iPhone users can download it from the App Store.
The next step after downloading Google Pay (GPay) on your Android phone or iPhone is to associate it with your account. This means signing in to the app using your Google account. You need to make sure you are using the same account as the one logged in to your Android phone or the Google app on iPhone.
The home screen of the Google Pay app prioritises UPI options, but Google lately started promoting RuPay credit cards based on UPI. Apart from a RuPay credit card, you can add Visa and Mastercard credit and debit cards on Google Pay to make payments both online and offline.
You need to open the Google Pay app on your phone and tap the profile picture or the account icon located at the top right corner. Now, choose the Payment methods option from the menu to continue with the process. Several options will appear on the screen, such as Add bank account, Set up UPI Lite, Add credit line, and Add RuPay credit card on UPI. If you have a UPI-based RuPay credit card, go with the last option, otherwise go to the next option.
Below the UPI payments section, you will see the Other ways to pay section. Under this section, you will see the Add credit or debit cards option where you can add Visa and Mastercard-enabled credit and debit cards. According to Google Pay, this option allows you to pay at stores with a simple tap and pay bills on Google Pay.
To continue the process, tap Add card, after which the Google Pay app will open the camera to allow scanning a debit or credit card and fetch the details automatically. Alternatively, users can choose to add card details manually. GPay will verify card details through one-time passwords (OTPs) sent to the registered numbers.
Once added, the debit and credit card options will start showing on the home screen of GPay. You can use credit or debit cards to pay using NFC at physical stores and make payments for mobile recharges and bills. You cannot send money to your GPay contacts using debit or credit cards.
The credit and debit card facility on GPay is available to everyone. However, you must remember that you should have an eligible card for it to work on GPay. Card issuers such as American Express or Maestro are not supported on GPay yet.
