ChatGPT memory feature: OpenAI today announced that ChatGPT’s ‘memory’ feature is now available to all users. The company had introduced the memory feature for ChatGPT back in February this year. However, at the time, this feature was available to a ‘small portion’ of free and ChatGPT Plus users. But now the company is making this feature available to everyone.
OpenAI made the announcement via a post on X (formerly Twitter) wherein it said that ChatGPT’ Plus users can now access their chat history even if they haven’t opted into training its AI model for improvement. Furthermore, the company said that this feature is available on the web today and that it will be available in ChatGPT‘s mobile app soon. But there’s a catch. ChatGPT’s memory feature is not available to users in Europe or Korea.
In addition to making its memory feature available to almost everyone, OpenAI also announced that it is making it easier for users to access all memories when updates occur. To use this functionality, users need to hover over “Memory updated”, then click “Manage memories” to review everything ChatGPT has picked up from your conversations and forget any unwanted memories.

ChatGPT users who have access to the memory feature can also turn it off. This ensures that the AI model powering ChatGPT doesn’t remember anything. Here’s how you can turn it off:
Step 1: Go to OpenAI’s web or mobile-based platform.
Step 2: Log into your OpenAI account.
Step 3: Go to the Settings menu.
Step 4: Now click the Personalization option.
Step 5: Click the Memory button and turn it off.
It is worth noting that ChatGPT users can also delete specific memories instead of turning off the feature completely. Here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Go to OpenAI’s web or mobile-based platform.
Step 2: Log into your OpenAI account.
Step 3: Go to the Settings menu.
Step 4: Now click the Personalization option.
Step 5: Click on the Manage Memory option.
Step 6: Delete the memories that you want to delete.
Lastly, OpenAI announced that users can also start a Temporary Chat for one-off conversations, which won’t appear in their history. Here’s how you can start a temporary chat with ChatGPT:
Step 1: Go to OpenAI’s web or mobile-based platform.
Step 2: Log into your OpenAI account.
Step 3: Tap the version of ChatGPT you’re using at the top of the chat.openai.com.
Step 4: Select Temporary chat.
