After just three years of flashy LED-backed hype, Nothing has officially announced that they’re killing the Glyph Interface. The signature light strip that made its phones unique and stand out won’t be used any longer from the upcoming Phone 3. While the company hasn’t given a clear reason or confirmed if this is a permanent goodbye, their latest teaser on X says it all: the lights are out. A brief history of the Glyph Interface

When the Nothing Phone (1) launched in 2022, it brought one of the most distinctive smartphone features in years. It featured a light-up back panel that pulsed, blinked, and glowed based on your notifications, ringtones, or even app actions. The Glyph Interface wasn’t just a party trick; it was a USP. Things evolved with the Phone (2), and the lights became smarter, integrating with apps like Uber and the camera for real-time feedback. But with the Phone (2a), the Glyph Interface was reduced to only three tiny LED strips. That minimal setup was a big step back from the original wow factor. Even the Phone (3a) and (3a) Pro carried the same minimal Glyph lights, which was enough of a hint of its fade-off. Fast forward to 2025, and Nothing just dropped a 9-second video showing the Phone (1)’s Glyph Interface shutting down. It’s almost like the company was trying to get rid of the glyph and has finally decided to do so in their upcoming Phone (3).

What’s Next Now? 

Even without the Glyph, Nothing’s not ditching its iconic transparent aesthetic. The recent teasers for the Nothing Phone (3) show the brand sticking to its signature see-through design. So if you’re into that minimal and transparent look, this phone might still appeal to you. But if you were one of those people who loved assigning custom ringtones to matching light patterns, then the light has faded away.
