Google’s Pixel phones are about to get a serious silicon upgrade. According to a new report, the company has signed a long-term chipmaking deal with TSMC. This move is expected to make the new Tensor chips more efficient and powerful, as TSMC is the world’s top semiconductor foundry. A Major Shift in Chip Strategy

Up until now, Google’s custom Tensor chips were produced by Samsung Foundry. But starting with the Tensor G5 in the Pixel 10, Google is switching over to TSMC. According to a report, the two companies have signed a 3 to 5-year deal, potentially covering Pixel 10 through Pixel 14. This is a clear sign that Google wants to tap into TSMC’s superior efficiency and performance, so its flagships can better compete with the best in the industry. Why Does This Matter?

TSMC has long been regarded as the gold standard in chip manufacturing. For example, when Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 was made by Samsung, it suffered from widespread heating issues. With TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, the upcoming Tensor G5 is expected to deliver better battery life, cooler thermals, and a noticeable boost in raw performance. That’s great news for Pixel fans, as future devices are set to offer much smoother experiences without any heating issues. 

While the Pixel 10 could benefit greatly from this TSMC partnership, early leaks suggest the Tensor G6 in the Pixel 11 might not be a major step forward. The G6 chip could even be a downgrade in some areas. Still, having a consistent foundry like TSMC could still help Google make their  Tensor chips better over time

This TSMC deal is a big win for the Pixel line. Even if Google’s chip designs don’t leap forward every year, they’ll now be built by the best in the business. This should translate to better efficiency, battery life, and fewer thermal issues starting with the Pixel 10 series.
