Apple has already unveiled its iOS 26 with several enhancements and updates that is never seen before. Now, the tech giant is planning to expand the capabilities of its Wallet app in a big way. The company has recently confirmed that it is going to bring the much awaited feature dubbed Digital ID to passports. The feature is expected to arrive before the end of 2025.

The Digital ID support will allow iPhone users to add their passports directly into Wallet, hence, making the identification verification smoother and more secure.

Digital ID and Apple Wallet

In recent years, Apple Wallet app has steadily evolved, rather than just being about payments and boarding passes. The app brought digital version of state driver’s license and ID’s, but the adoption has been slow due to the state-level agreements in the United States.

Availability:

The Passport Feature in Wallet will be available for the United States citizens currently. The future updates are still on the way and the tech giant could roll it for other countries too in nearby future.

While no exact release date has been confirmed, reports suggest it could debut in iOS 26.1, expected in late October, or iOS 26.2, which might arrive by December.

Digital Passport Features:

Currently, only 11 states and territories in the US support digital ID’s in Wallet. This limits how widely the feature can be used. By introducing U.S. passport support, Apple is set to bring digital identification to millions more users across the country.

How the Passport Feature Will Work

Once launched, U.S. passport support in Wallet will let iPhone owners use their device in place of a physical passport for certain purposes. The most immediate benefit will be seen at TSA checkpoints during domestic travel, where a digital passport can be presented just like a traditional ID. Beyond airports, the feature will also work for age verification in apps, retail locations, and even websites, similar to how existing digital IDs function today.
