Apple has started training workers at its Tamil Nadu facility to produce the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, states Bloomberg report. This will be the first time that the company will manufacture its iPhone Pro models outside China. In addition, the report also claims that Apple has also partnered with Pegatron and Tata Group in order to smoothly operate iPhone 16 series productions. The company started manufacturing in India in 2017 with the iPhone SE and then further extended it to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. In China, these smartphones are manufactured by Apple’s contract manufacturers Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron. Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturing partner, will lead the production at its facility in Tamil Nadu, India. This move is a significant boost to India’s manufacturing ambitions and is expected to create thousands of jobs in the country. As per report from earlier this year, India accounts for 14 percent of iPhone output which can see an immense increase of 25 percent as early as next year. “Apple Inc has started to train thousands of workers at its Tamil Nadu factory to produce the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max as close to the global debut as possible”, Bloomberg News reported on August 20 citing sources.
By manufacturing the iPhone 16 Pro series in India, Apple aims to reduce its dependence on China, which has been its primary manufacturing hub for years. This move is also seen as a strategic step to mitigate the risks associated with the ongoing geopolitical tensions between the US and China. As per report, the Taiwan-based manufacturing company, Foxconn, will start expanding its manufacturing base in India.
Tech giant can launch iPhone 16 series in the early weeks of September. The official date has not been announced by Apple. But like every year, this year too Apple can unveil its flagship smartphones.
The production of iPhone 16 Pro series in India is a win-win situation for both Apple and India. Apple will benefit from the reduced production costs and the diversification of its supply chain, while India will benefit from the creation of jobs and the establishment of a high-tech manufacturing ecosystem .
