Sony has unveiled the much-awaited PlayStation 5 Slim console in India. The new console succeeds the existing PlayStation 5, which was launched back in 2020. The new Slim console comes in both digital and disc versions. Two of the major highlights of the console are a detachable disc drive and increased storage over the original PS5. Interestingly, Sony isn’t amping up the price of the console and is making it in line with the existing version to attract customers. The PlayStation 5 Slim console is more portable as it is lighter and slimmer. The console’s weight has been reduced by up to 24 percent and the volume by 30 percent. For the most part, the console looks identical to the existing PS5. However, there’s a new vertical stand, which is sold separately. The Slim console comes with an in-built storage of 1TB as opposed to 825GB on the PS5 original. Additionally, users can expand the storage using an SSD. Now, with the Slim console, users can detach their disc drive from the Disc Edition of the console. Those with Digital Edition can add a new disc drive. These are the only major differences between the PS5 Slim and PS5.
Apart from this, the internals of the console remain the same as the PS5. Starting with the chipset, it is powered by an 8-core AMD Ryzen Zen 2 processor paired with AMD RDNA 2 graphics. The GPU has 10.3 TFLOPS and a variable frequency of 2.23 GHz. It has 16GB of DDR6 RAM. The console supports 4K video output at a 120Hz refresh rate in compatible titles.
It also has Tempest 3D audio support for surround sound. As for connectivity, it has Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, 2x USB Type-C ports, and 2x USB Type-A ports. The PS5 Slim Disc Edition weighs 3.2 kg and the PS5 Slim Digital Edition weighs 2.6 kg. The console will be shipped with a single DualSense controller.
With PS5 Slim’s release, we aren’t sure if the existing PS5’s price will be reduced or if it will be discontinued in the country. We will have to wait to learn more about the same.
