Sony is bringing a major upgrade to its PlayStation Portable handheld and transforming it into a standalone gaming device. To recall, PlayStation Portal was launched in 2023 as a streaming-only console companion. The Portal now allows subscribers with PlayStation Plus Premium to stream PS5 games directly from the cloud. This will hence remove the need to connect to a PS5. The update is rolling out globally and introducing several upgrades, like improved redesign interfaces and enhanced 3D audio. In addition, it will also have better accessibility options along with a host of features that are aimed at improving the overall gaming experience.
PlayStation Portal users will now be able to enjoy thousands of PS5 games via cloud streaming. The update will roll out starting November 5 at 6:00 PM PT and 7:30 AM IST. The update will allow them to stream games even if their PS5 is powered off or being used by another account.
Gamers will now be able to access popular titles such as Grand Theft Auto V, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Resident Evil 4, Astro Bot, Ghost of Yōtei, Borderlands 4, Fortnite, and many more.
Additionally, the update also extends to games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue, such as Hogwarts Legacy, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, God of War Ragnarök, and Sword of the Sea.
The new update is introducing a new interface that is divided into three main sections, including Remote Play, Cloud Streaming, and Search. There will be a dedicated Cloud Streaming home screen, allowing users to browse streamable titles from both their personal library and PlayStation Plus collections.
Other than this, Sony also recommends using an internet connection of at least 5Mbps, along with faster connections up to 52 Mbps.
This update includes a number of quality-of-life enhancements, such as support for 3D audio for compatible headsets, improved accessibility features, the ability to accept multiplayer invitations, access to the in-game store, a network status page, and a new passcode lock for security. According to Sony, the Portal has surpassed smartphones and tablets as the most popular device for PS5 game streaming.
