Garena appears to be quite serious about its India presence, as it is moving forward with the idea of Free Fire’s release in the country. To make that happen, the company is reportedly localizing its India operations by moving its game server to India. This comes seven months after the Indian government’s nudge.
Garena is reported to have plans to install its server in Yotta Data Services in Mumbai, as reported by the Economic Times. “Yotta is working with Garena’s HQ (headquarter) team on testing the server, which is showing high throughput required for handling streaming workloads with least redundancy,” stated a person close to the company to the publication.
“It is important that performance metrics are adequately tested before the game goes to market because esports tournaments put many ecosystem players at stake and therefore should be devoid of any technical snags.”
This means nothing but good news for those waiting for Free Fire to release in India, as once the servers are locally set, there may be no issues in launching the game in the country.
Garena itself hinted that the game is indeed launching in India soon. It revealed that the game will feature a fully localised infrastructure to meet the needs of authorities in India.
“Free Fire India will feature a fully localised infrastructure tailored to meet the needs and requirements of the authorities and our stakeholders in India, ” said Garena in a statement to the publication.
Unfortunately, we do not know the exact launch date of the game in India. However, expect Free Fire India to arrive in the next couple of months.
Notably, the game was banned two years back by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) in India. It was set to relaunch in September 2023, however, the launch was postponed further. During that time, the company stated that they wanted to bring the best possible experience to gamers, hence the delay.
At the time of its ban, the game was one of the most popular games to be banned in India. Now, its popularity is shared by Free Fire Max, which is an enhanced game optimised to run on high-end devices. Free Fire can be run on slightly lower-end devices and that’s why its presence in India is important even for Garena.
