OPPO A78: The All-rounder entertainment device of the year

OPPO just launched its latest smartphone A78, which comes across as a cost-effective device bringing notable improvements in display, audio, fast-charging technology, and design for an apt price of INR 17499. It is one of the few phones that strike the right chord between looks and performance, giving customers value for their money — and a reason to flaunt their brand-new phone.

We got the pleasure of using the OPPO A78 over the past few days and were amazed at how well it performs on all smartphone evaluation parameters giving us a complete entertainment package. Let’s find out why the OPPO A78 should be your next smartphone in this review.

MESMERIZING DISPLAY

One of the strongest suits of the OPPO A78 is its display, which uses an FHD+ AMOLED panel to give customers true-to-life colors, clearer details, and improved brightness for better visuals. It measures 6.4 inches, which was large enough to enjoy watching our favorite movies and shows. The AMOLED panel gives rich and accurate colors so that the deep blacks look amazingly black. This was helpful when we were watching movies, especially in a low-light environment. The display shines even when you take it outdoors. Thanks to the peak brightness of 600 nits, the display can get bright enough to easily read text and watch videos without a problem. With the help of Smart Backlight, the phone display adapts to different lighting conditions to reduce eye fatigue. The SGS certification also allows for good eye care by reducing levels of harmful blue light below 12.5 percent.

There is support for Widevine L1, which means you can enjoy movies and shows in Full-HD quality on streaming platforms. It is also Amazon Prime Video HDR certified.

To further add to the movie-watching experience the stereo speakers on the OPPO A78, are tuned with software algorithms, and noise and echo cancellation to offer an immersive high-quality audio experience. There is support for Ultra Volume Mode, too, which let us listen to music and incoming calls even when we were traveling in a busy metro by increasing the volume to 200 percent. With support for Real HD Sound 3.0, the phone can determine the perfect sound tuning in different scenarios as well.

While everything looks smooth on this phone’s 90Hz display, gamers will appreciate the 180Hz touch sampling rate for quicker display response. Moreover, a screen as big as this one also favors gaming, which is another strong suit of the new OPPO phone. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint sensor, allowing you to use high-level biometric security with ease.

CLASS-LEADING BATTERY

The OPPO A78 uses a 5000mAh battery with support for 67W SUPERVOOC_TM charging, which allowed the phone to charge a good 19 percent battery in just five minutes, 73 percent in 30 minutes, and 100 percent in about 45 minutes.  With a 5-minute charge, we got 4.61 hours of phone calls or 2.47 hours of YouTube video viewing.

OPPO’s battery technology which is class-leading is available on the A78. The phone has Battery Health Engine, which increases the battery lifespan up to 1600 charge cycles, which is nearly four years with typical daily usage. The battery comes with 5-layer charging protection for all-round safe charging.

TRENDY DESIGN

Design-wise, the phone looks sleek and trendy. It comes in Mist Black and Aqua Green colors. The Mist Black colorway adds a touch of yellow-green to its pure black color base with the use of the OPPO Glow process, which, when combined with the CD texture on the coating layer, gives the phone a unique metallic gloss. The Aqua Green, on the other hand, uses a double-layer process to superimpose an OPPO-first Diamond Matrix Design atop a water-green base layer to offer a vibrant color, which sparkles like diamonds to create a uniquely exquisite appearance. Its ultra-slim retro design with a 2.5D right-angled middle frame and smoothed edges make this one of the good-looking phones in the segment.

BRILLIANT CAMERAS

OPPO offers world-class cameras on its phones and the A78 does not stray far away. On the back of the phone, there is a 50MP main camera with a 1/27-inch sensor with an F1.8 aperture and a 0.64-micron pixel size and a 2MP depth camera with a 1/5-inch sensor with an F2.4 aperture and a 1.75-micron pixel size. On the front, the phone has an 8MP camera inside a punch-hole. The OPPO A78 gave us flexibility in terms of what we would like to shoot with the cameras on the phone. We used a variety of features like the Dual-View Video, Bokeh Flare Portrait, AI Portrait Retouching, Flash Snapshot, and Ultra-clear 108MP and were pleasantly surprised.

The Dual-View Video was quite a cool feature as we’re able to shoot with both front and rear cameras to combine them into a single frame for fun, stylish vlogs. The Upgraded Selfie HDR can be used with Portrait Mode to bring realistic details, vivid colors, natural skin tones, and life-like textures to selfies.

OPPO has conducted user research to better understand local tastes and requirements for portrait photography in different markets, so users can enjoy more personalized retouching effects. We used the AI Portrait Enhancement feature, which is enabled by default, so we could do tailored adjustments to image parameters like skin tone, color saturation, brightness, and contrast.

SUPERLATIVE PERFORMANCE

While the OPPO A78 aces the display, its performance is outstanding in its segment. With an octa-core Snapdragon 680 processor, which is built on a 6nm process, offers smooth and efficient performance with optimized power consumption in gaming, imaging, audio, and streaming among others. On top of that, the OPPO A78 uses the company’s self-developed, system-level technical solution, called Dynamic Computing Engine, which optimized app opening speeds by 1.42 percent. This allowed the phone to keep up to 19 apps alive in the background so we could easily switch between them smoothly.

The new OPPO phone has 8GB of RAM, but with the help of the RAM Expansion feature, we could get up to 16GB of RAM. You also get 128GB of internal storage on the phone, giving you the ability to store a lot of photos, videos, and music. OPPO also promises hardware and software support for up to four years.
