YouTube Deepfake identifying tools

Story Highlights

  • YouTube's face detection tool will identify deepfake faces of celebrities in content.
  • The synthetic singing tool has already been developed.
  • Both the tools will reduce the use of AI-generated deepfake content on the platform.

YouTube has finally announced tools that will work to help the creators protect their content from deepfake. The platform is working on new tools that will detect AI-generated content using a person’s voice or face. The face detection tool will help people identify the content that uses their AI-generated face or voice. Similarly, the synthetic-singing identification tech will allow the creators to find the content that uses their AI-generated singing voices.

YouTube to limit the use of AI-generated deepfake content on the platform

The upcoming features of YouTube, face detection and synthetic-singing identification, will give the creators more liberty in terms of who they want to allow to use their face and voice in a deepfake video. In the past, we have seen many examples of using synthetic voices of celebrities in strangely funny scenarios. For example, Cristiano Ronaldo singing Seven Years and David Beckham singing Perfect.

This a huge step taken from YouTube’s side because as of now, there are 100s of YouTube channels that thrive on deepfake content. The synthetic identification tool has already been developed by the YouTube team and now they are developing the fac detection tool at a fast pace. YouTube Vice President, Amjad Hanif, mentioned that the tools are an initiative to provide the creators with better control of how their content is used on the platform.

He further said in his blog post that scraping any creator’s content from the platform for training an AI model is a straight up violation of YouTube’s terms of service. Nonetheless, creators will have the authority to allow third parties to use their content for AI model training. This is a crucial step for YouTube in times when AI-generated content is getting a little out of hand. With the way new laws are being pitched and introduced everywhere to curb AI content, it will be interesting to see the process these AI-content companies adopt to survive in the market.
