Samsung has added support for 16 new languages, including Hindi, to its generative artificial intelligence-based Galaxy AI. The company said it partnered with different academic institutions to expand the language capabilities of its native AI features. One of them is the Samsung R&D Institute India-Bangalore (SRI-B), the company’s largest research centre outside of South Korea, which helped the company develop the Hindi language for Galaxy AI. According to Samsung, SRI-B utilised a combination of translated and transliterated data to develop the Hindi AI model. Hindi, particularly, is a complex language for machines considering its numerous dialects, tonal differences, and mixing of English words. Samsung said it also took native linguists’ help to train the AI model to capture Hindi’s phonetic structure accurately. The data trove came mostly from the Vellore Institute of Technology, one of India’s premier engineering and technology institutes. It provided Samsung with curated audio data, including conversational speech, words, and commands. Samsung said it used that data to train its AI model so it can understand and speak the world’s fourth most-spoken language. Also Read: Just Like Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, But Better! Among other languages Galaxy AI now supports are Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian. Samsung said SRI-B is working closely with the company’s research centres in other regions to train the Galaxy AI model in other languages. The new languages will help Galaxy smartphone users access features such as Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist in their local language. Some of these features will also work offline, per the company.
The announcement comes days ahead of Samsung’s next Galaxy Unpacked event. Scheduled to take place on July 10 in Paris, France, the Galaxy Unpacked event will see the launch of Samsung’s next foldable phones, Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. Both phones are expected to come with Galaxy AI features, enhancing productivity to the same level as the Galaxy S24 series. Samsung is also launching a slew of other devices, including two new smartwatches and truly wireless earbuds at the event.
