OpenAI is gearing up to launch its next major AI model — GPT-5 in early August, a report by The Verge suggested. If it sticks to the expected timeline, GPT-5 could become the most advanced language model in the ChatGPT lineup. It will be a shift from the current o-series to a more unified AI experience. The new model is said to include three versions — a base GPT-5, a smaller “mini” version, and a lightweight “nano” version. While the base and mini variants are expected to be available in ChatGPT and through the API, the nano version will be limited to API-only access.
One of the key upgrades in GPT-5 is expected to be its native reasoning ability. Unlike earlier versions, where users had to choose between “standard” and “advanced” reasoning models, GPT-5 is expected to combine both under one roof. This means the model will automatically understand when to think more deeply. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had earlier hinted that all future GPT models would be capable of “chain-of-thought” reasoning by default.
For those using ChatGPT for free, GPT-5 will reportedly be available with its standard intelligence setting, the report suggested. However, ChatGPT Plus and Pro users will get access to a more capable version, along with integrated tools like voice, search, canvas, and advanced research.
Altman also shared that Microsoft engineers have been preparing infrastructure support for GPT-5 since May, though the launch saw some delays due to internal testing. Still, recent statements from OpenAI insiders suggest the wait won’t be long now.
Before GPT-5 drops, OpenAI is expected to release a new open-weight model, its first since GPT-2. This lightweight model, rumoured to be similar to o3 mini, will also feature reasoning capabilities and could arrive by the end of July. It’s expected to be available on platforms like Azure and Hugging Face.
