With the AI battle heating up, it looks like one of the pioneers is ready to take things up a notch. Midjourney, known for generating some really high quality AI images has now officially rolled out its first public AI video generator. This is a much-awaited feature that allows users to animate static images into short clips using AI. Whether the image was generated on the platform or uploaded by a user, Midjourney’s new tool can now bring it to life.

Midjourney AI Video Generator Key Features

The new feature is currently accessible via Midjourney’s website and Discord server. Users can now generate an image and click on the new animate button. By tapping it, create a 5-second clip. This clip can be extended by 4 seconds up to four times, for a maximum video length of 21 seconds. There are also high and low motion settings that control whether both the subject and camera move, or just the subject. This gives users more control over their AI-generated footage.

Additionally, there are two animation options: a default motion that adds subtle movement effects, and a manual mode that lets you describe exactly how you want the animation to behave.

Pricing and Access

To use the video generator, users currently need an active Midjourney subscription. Plans start at $10 (approx. Rs 866) per month, which includes around 3.3 hours of fast GPU time. However, video generation is significantly more resource-intensive, costing about 8 times more GPU time than a single image job, or roughly 1 image credit per second of video.

What’s Next for Midjourney?

In a post, founder David Holz called this initial release a stepping stone. However, it has also come at a legal cost for Midjourney, as Disney and Universal have raised concerns over the video generator potentially infringing on copyrighted material.

With competition from the likes of Google Veo, Meta, and OpenAI, Midjourney will have to sprint ahead in this race to make a lasting impact in the market.
