Google Content Credentials

Story Highlights

  • Google Content Credentials feature will tell you the source of an image or a video.
  • The feature will be rolled out for YouTube as well.
  • Many companies like Leica and Sony are in support of the feature.

Google has announced that it is working on a new tech in a few months that will change the way we perceive AI-generated images. Google will use the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity’s (C2PA) technical standard popularly known as Content Credentials. The C2PA will work in order to tell the origin of the video or an image to the user. For example, the Content Credentials will tell the users if the image is captured by a camera, generated by AI, or edited on software.

Google Content Credentials feature

As claimed by Google, the C2PA tech will be used in the Search. Following that, if someone searches for an image on Google and it has C2PA metadata then the users will be able to know more about the same by clicking on the ‘About the image’ button. Not only this, but Google is also planning to implement the C2PA in the ads system.

Google is playing on the front foot against the AI-generated content or at least the company wants everyone to save them from getting duped. Google is also planning to include the Content Credentials feature on YouTube for the content that is captured on camera. Google previously also suggested identifying AI-generated deepfakes of YouTube creators and telling them if any video is using the same.

TRENDING NOW

As for the Content Credentials or C2PA standard, Google is one of the first ones in the industry to adopt the same. The tech giant is being supported by firms like Leica and Sony along with Canon and Nikon saying that they will also join the cause. For a global implementation, the standard will need adoption and support from almost all the large firms. After Google, all eyes will be on Apple to see if they adapt to the new standards or if they keep moving at their own pace.
