Google is adding a minor but useful update to the Lens feature. With the latest update, Google Lens users can instantly record videos as they add voice context to add search queries. In simple words, you can now record videos within Lens and quickly add a voice prompt to search the video. For instance, you could record a video of a dish and ask Google Lens the recipe for it.
Android enthusiast Mishaal Rahman posted a video of how the feature works. In the video, you can see him recording a video while using Google Lens by tapping the shutter button and then adding a voice prompt that he wanted Lens to look for in the video. He asked how many berries there were on the plate seen in the video. Google came back with results, powered by Gemini AI.
The feature was first spotted back in June when Google was apparently testing it, but its rollout in August is good news for users. It also shows how quick Google is with public rollout of features. This also means the rollout is a server-side push, so you have likely already received it on your Android phone. I could use the feature to record a video and ask Lens something related to the video. Google Lens came up with the correct answer for most of my queries, but it may return with incorrect answers for tricky questions or if Lens finds the video complex.
Google added Multisearch in Lens back in 2022, allowing users to add questions and supplemental qurstions to the initial search for better refinement. For instance, you could click a photo of a building and then ask Lens, say, when it was built to get more information. Adding a video will give you better understanding of the things you have recorded with the new feature.
