There is an app that can detect if you are lying.

Story Highlights

  • The app can detect lies with an 80 percent accuracy.
  • The VerifEye is available to download on Android and iOS.
  • It tracks eye movements to help detect lies.

If you are in a habit of lying to most people, you may be aware that there are certain facial expressions and changes in the way you speak that make you susceptible to being caught. But chances of that happening are slim. But beware of a new app that claims to detect if you are not telling the truth.

VerifEye is a lie detector app that claims about 80 percent accuracy in verifying if someone is lying or not. The app has been around for a while, but its appearance on some Reddit threads recently allowed VerifEye’s popularity to spike up dramatically. Converus, the company behind this app, explained that VerifEye uses a logistic regression algorithm to check the truth. Contrary to the general speculation about the app, the company denied the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in lie detection.

AI is still there

Even though Converus said VerifEye does not use AI to detect lies, it is not entirely out of picture. The lie detector app uses AI to identify verbal answers given by a person during a test. AI also helps the app recognise and track eye movements during the test, especially during changing lighting conditions. Based on the inputs from the data collected with the help of AI, the app decides whether or not the person is telling the truth. However, the accuracy is not more than 80 percent, meaning the app cannot surely tell if what the person taking the test is purely true.

According to the company, the lie detector app uses the same computer test that it has been using since 2014. However, additional data such as pupil dilation, blink rate, and eye fixations help the app detect lies. That is because, the company says, the brain takes more effort to form lies, resulting in changes in facial expressions.

The VerifEye app is available to download on both Android and iOS mobile platforms and uses the phone’s camera to monitor facial changes during the test.
