Google has released the Android 15 Developer Preview 2 which gives us a glimpse of what we can expect from the final version of Android 15. Here's what's new in the DP 2 of Android 15.
Android 15 Developer Preview confirms the presence of Satellite messaging. This is coming to Android two years after Apple announced it. However, Apple's version is meant for emergencies. Satellite messaging on Android 15 will be for usual messaging, where you can not only send text but also get a reply back from others without a SIM.
With Android 15 DP 2, Google is allowing app makers to detect that their apps are being recorded. This ability lets app developers block screen recording on their apps. It builds on a previous feature that introduced screen recording for individual apps instead of the entire screen.
PDF apps on Android 15 can now incorporate advanced features like password-protected files, annotations, form editing, searching, and selection with copy.
The DP 2 brings the ability to share audio with other Bluetooth-connected headphones.
Apart from the major changes, the DP 2 brings some tweaks throughout the OS. The text on the lock screen is now larger. There's now an 'All App' label in the app drawer on Pixel devices. Further, Google has added integrated archiving for individual apps and also changed some labels.
The OS should be announced at the Google I/O 2024 scheduled for May 14. Expect a stable release later.
Android 15 stable version should be rolled out to Pixel phones in Q4 of this year, just around the time of the next Pixel phone launch. Other eligible Android phones may get the new OS by the end of this year or in 2025, depending on the device and the manufacturer.
