Intel has confirmed that more than 500 jobs will be cut in Oregon as part of a major restructuring effort aimed at streamlining its operations. The layoffs, set to begin on July 15, will affect employees at Intel’s facilities in Aloha and Hillsboro, according to a regulatory filing reviewed by Bloomberg. The move comes amid broader cost-cutting plans that could impact up to 20% of Intel’s global workforce.
A total of 529 roles will be eliminated in Oregon. These layoffs follow a recent notice in California, where 107 employees at Intel’s Santa Clara headquarters were also informed of job cuts. The restructuring is taking place under the leadership of new CEO Lip-Bu Tan, who has launched an aggressive campaign to reduce costs and increase efficiency.
Though Intel hasn’t publicly disclosed the total number of positions being cut, sources told Bloomberg that the restructuring could affect more than one-fifth of the company’s global staff.
In a statement, Intel said the job reductions are part of an effort to become “a leaner, faster, and more efficient company.” The company aims to remove layers of complexity and empower smaller engineering teams to focus on core innovations. Intel’s leadership shift also reflects a new approach – moving away from large team sizes as a measure of success.
Several critical positions are being affected, including physical design engineers, chip developers, cloud software experts, and senior executives like business leads and a vice president of IT.
The layoffs will reportedly also affect Intel’s internal foundry team, responsible for chip manufacturing. It could affect up to 20% of the staff. Moreover, the tech giant is also planning to outsource some of its marketing work to Accenture, which may rely on AI for customer support functions.
The announcement follows a tough period for Intel, which laid off 15,000 workers in 2024. With over 62,000 tech jobs lost globally in 2025 so far, Intel joins other tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Meta in making deep workforce cuts.
