OpneAI is again making waves for its global expansion and its decisive push into one of the most important markets, India. Over the past year, India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing user bases for OpenAI, with millions of people relying on ChatGPT. This massive user base has led OpenAI to go local in a big way, and hence, the tech giant has introduced Indian rupee pricing for the very first time. ChatGPT is now available in INR for users.
As part of the pilot program, OpenAI has started offering its ChatGPT platform in INR. To recall, Indian users had to pay in US dollars to access ChatGPT’s premium tiers. This often incurs additional currency conversion fees. But now, Indian users can pay in Indian rupees for access to the premium segment of ChatGPT.
This move is aimed at making subscriptions more accessible and straightforward for Indian customers, removing the friction of foreign transactions and potentially opening the door for a much larger paying user base.
Under the new Indian pricing, ChatGPT Plus will be available at Rs 1,999 per month, including GST. However, the more advanced Pro plan will be priced at Rs 19,900 per month.
Talking about the Business Team plan, this will be available at Rs 2,099 per seat each month. As compared to the previous pricing that was available in the US dollar, the Plus plan was priced at $20 (about Rs 1,750), $200 (around Rs 17,500) for Pro, and $30 (about Rs 2,600) per Team seat.
As per reports, OpenAI is also planning to bring a more affordable version, dubbed ChatGPT Go Plan. This plan is expected to be priced at Rs 399 per month, attracting students, casual users, and first-time AI adopters.
OpenAI recently launched GPT-5 -5, which delivers improved performance in 12 Indian languages, making it relevant for the country’s diverse linguistic audience. In addition, India is now OpenAI’s second-largest market outside the US. CEO Sam Altman has hinted that India might soon surpass the US in terms of ChatGPT usage.
Not just OpenAI, rival companies like Perplexity are also eyeing the Indian market, and hence, moving aggressively to win over Indian users. Interestingly, Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel to offer its premium plan, which is priced at Rs 17,000 per year, but will be available for free to Airtel users.
