Meta is here with a new initiative with which the company aims to keep users safe from scams during the holiday season. Through the global anti-scam awareness campaign Meta is trying to tech safety tips to all users that can keep them safe online.
The step has been taken by Meta because of the rise in the number of scams all over the globe. According to open-source researchers from Graphika, scammers are targeting people from the US, UK, and India. The scams mostly include fraudulent gift promises, fake coupons, holiday decoration packages, and a lot more.
One such example of a scam is that the scammers use fake coupons to make the customers believe and share their personal data for a prize draw. In addition, users also get scammed with posts promising Christmas gift boxes that dupe the users into providing crucial information like their debt and income details. Meta has worked against these types of scammers and they also took action against scammers who were using AI-generated videos and had a fake website to endorse heavy discounts (fake ones) on their services.
On WhatsApp, the company has added a context card feature that tells in detail about unknown users and groups when they send messages or add users to a particular group. On Instagram, the Alerts feature warns the users about any suspicious follow requests from accounts that are flagged previously for pulling off scams. On Facebook Marketplace, users get a notification when a message is identified as a scam.
And for the Indian market, Meta has specially introduced a campaign named ‘Scams se Bacho’ where they have added Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana as well. The campaign is focused on spreading awareness related to online scams that are going on in the country. Meta has also roped in regional creators so that the message of safety reaches a large audience.
