Google continues to phase out support for its apps and services on older smartphones and devices. This time, it’s one of the most popular products, YouTube announced, and it is officially ending support for several older iPhone and iPad models. If you are someone who is using an aging Apple device, then you might soon find that the app no longer works.

Here’s Why YouTube is Ending Support for Older iPhone and iPad Models:

In a recent update, Google officially confirmed that certain iOS versions might not be compatible with the YouTube app. This will effectively cut off access for users on outdated hardware and hence this change will hamper your services. Google is taking this step in order to improve security, performance, and user experience on newer devices.

If you are an avid YouTube user and relies on it for entertainment, news, or learning, then it is important to check if your device is on the affected list or not. Additionally, you must check what your options are moving forwards.

YouTube will not work on these iPhone and iPad Models:

  1. iPhone 7
  2. iPhone 7 Plus
  3. iPhone 6 (launched in 2014)
  4. iPhone 6 Plus (launched in 2014)
  5. iPhone 6s (launched in 2015)
  6. iPhone 6s Plus (launched in 2015)
  7. iPhone SE (1st generation) (launched in 2016)
  8. iPad Air 2 (released in 2014)
  9. iPad mini 4 (released in 2015)
  10. iPod touch 7th generation (released in 2019, discontinued in 2022)

This Came Just Before the WWDC 2025:

What’s interesting is that this came just ahead of the Apple’s much-anticipated Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The significant update will shake up for a few users with older devices. To recall, recently Apple shared that users and fans can tune in to keynote event via its official YouTube channel, but what flew under the radar for many users is the rollout of the YouTube app version 20.22.1. Interestingly, this new update requires iOS 16 or iPadOS 16 as a minimum requirement.

Apple hasn’t officially framed this as part of the WWDC 2025, but the timing seems a subtle push to move toward newer hardware or operating systems.
