Elon Musk’s platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has begun transitioning, and we will witness the end of the iconic Twitter.com domain. The Twitter as we knew it is officially being transferred onto X.com, which is a significant move in Elon Musk moving forward with his strategy of creating an all-encompassing super-app. However, there is a significant user alert that goes hand in hand with this big change.
Users who have used hardware-based security keys to perform two-factor authentication (2FA) will have to re-enroll prior to November 10, 2025, or they may lose their access to their accounts.
The change of twitter.com to x.com isn’t just a change of name, but it also has effects on how users will log in safely. Since 2FA keys were originally linked to the twitter.com domain, they won’t work properly once everything moves to x.com. In order to secure your account, X is requesting users to re-register their security keys in the new domain.
The company also ensured that it is not due to security reasons, and hence, it is just a technical adjustment that will make sure that your log-in procedure is functioning properly on the new site. If you use text message codes for authentication applications in 2FA, then you do not need to do anything, as these will continue to function properly.
If you don’t re-enroll your hardware key before November 10, your account will automatically be locked out. If your account is locked out, then you will have to undergo a recovery or change to a different form of 2FA to be able to log in again.
X highly recommends having at least one form of 2FA enabled in order to prevent hackers or unauthorized entries to your account, especially when you have a verified or high-traffic account.
The change of the iconic twitter.com is not only a look back at the technical side, but the close of an era on the internet. There are still millions of links, embeds, and API’s that point at the old Twitter address, and thus, minor inconveniences are to be expected in the process of transition. Nevertheless, the step demonstrates the desire of Musk to turn X into something significantly larger platform that will combine social networking, digital payments, media, and communication within a single location.
