Apple is pushing its boundaries in India for its product manufacturing. The tech giant has most important and long-standing manufacturing partner, Foxconn. In a recent report, the Taiwanese electronics giant has officially started production of Apple AirPods. The company began production at its new facility in Hyderabad. It seems Apple is all set to shift its production base from China to India. The decision came just after the recent global supply chain challenges.
Hyderabad production unit comes under Foxconn’s larger investment plan where the tech giant is committed to spend $400 million to set up and expand its manufacturing unit. Nevertheless. The company will soon start its larger plant in Bengaluru in order to close the iPhone production in India. Additionally, the Hyderabad facility is primarily focused on assembling AirPods. As per report, the first batch of the Apple AirPods are being produced exclusively for export markets.
As per an official spokesperson, “Yes, Apple AirPods production at Foxconn’s new Hyderabad facility has started for export purposes. The new Bengaluru facility will also soon start operations for iPhone production and will play a key role in ramping up exports from India. The new plant will have a peak capacity of 20 million units per annum.”
The decision of shifting production part of Apple comes in light of the new US tariff system, positioning it as an alternative to China. US President Donald Trump has increased the tariff for some Chinese products with up to 100% that threatens the supply-chain stability. Talking about India being the next hub for Apple’s production, it helps the tech giant to diversify their supply chain but also align’s with the Indian government’s Make in India initiative.
To recall, Apple has previously assembled iPhones in India including iPhone 12, 13, 14, and even parts of the 15 series through Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron. This time, the company increases the product lineup in India’s manufacturing hub with Apple’s AirPods.
