According to the latest leak, Samsung has patented a vertically rollable phone that can transform from a compact device into a taller, full-sized screen with a simple swipe or press. This could be the ideal middle point for consumers, as foldables still feel bulky and somewhat gimmicky, rollables might offer the perfect solution. They minimise device thickness while still providing the functionality of a larger screen when needed. Also Read: Oppo Find X9 Series Sale In India Begins Today; Should You Buy It?
At MWC 2024, TECNO and even Moto have already showcased their rollable concept phones. Although these were just concept devices, their showcase looked solid, and the technology might evolve enough in the coming years for them to officially release these phones.
Samsung is one of the biggest tech giants, and their implementation of new innovations has always resulted in laying the blueprint for others. For instance, the Galaxy Fold was one of the first-gen devices that actually put foldables on the map in the smartphone space. They could very well be replicating this with their rollable phone, likely refining it before showcasing it to ensure it’s one of the most advanced devices on the market.
The patent already reveals some key information, like the dual-rear camera setup and a thick bottom bezel, which most likely houses the motor and mechanism that enable the screen to roll out. The back side seems to feature a dual-lens with flash camera setup that mirrors the style of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

While the concept is intriguing, Samsung has yet to showcase it to the public. Most likely, they are working on the smooth transition and weight distribution of the device to ensure that, when it is revealed, it doesn’t look like an undercooked product.
Samsung has been exploring new ways to expand screen real estate for years now. Their display division has showcased multiple experimental concepts that merge foldable and slidable tech. One standout example was the Flex Hybrid, unveiled at CES 2023, which folded on one side and extended on the other.
