Apple reportedly working on a smart display for smart home control, Apple TV set-top box

Apple is said to be working on a range of smart home devices, including a low-end iPad display, an Apple TV set-top box, and a fusion product.

In an unusual January launch, Apple introduced new Mac devices, as well as the secon-generation HomePod speaker. HomePod is the gateway to the company’s smart home environment, which, according to a new report, will soon expand. Apple is reportedly working on a “slate of devices” for the smart home. These may include new smart displays that can control smart home devices and an Apple TV set-top box.

Bloomberg has reported that Apple is developing iPad-like displays that will have low-end specifications and will be meant to control HomeKit-powered devices. The smart display, which can be mounted on walls or maybe attached to a refrigerator magnetically, will also allow users to make FaceTime calls. This tablet product could control things “like thermostats and lights, show video and handle FaceTime chats.”

Apple may also be discussing the idea of building smart home displays that are larger than the regular iPad models. However, details of these products are not clear right now. The report added that these products have already been delayed several times on the development front, so you should not expect them to arrive before next year.

In addition to smart home displays, Apple is also reportedly working on a new Apple TV version. Unlike the regular Apple TV models, the next version may come with set-top box like features. It could feature an upgraded processor, but retain the same design as the existing Apple TV models. Apple may release this version in the first half of 2024. More details on this version are unclear, but the report also mentioned a third product.

Apple could also be working on a new product that combines the features of the Apple TV, the HomePod, and a FaceTime camera into a single device. This project has been in the works for a while now and has suffered many setbacks. But Apple is persistant about the idea and the work on this device is “still going.” Apple initially wanted to launch this device this year, but it may now be delayed.
