Apple is planning to step up their chip development, with a focus on specialised silicon. This might be for a range of new devices, including its first smart glasses, AI servers, and upcoming MacBooks. According to a report from Bloomberg News, Apple has made significant progress on the chip designed to power its smart glasses, which could soon compete with Meta’s popular Ray-Ban glasses.
This move clearly shows that Apple is ready to disrupt the wearable tech market by doubling down on a new product category. Apple’s smart glasses are expected to feature multiple cameras and be powered by an energy-efficient chip, custom-designed to handle these functions. This chip is based on the same technology that Apple uses in its Watch, and the company might be tweaking it a bit for lower energy consumption in their upcoming glasses.
This aligns with previous reports of Apple being ambitious to grow in the AI wearable space. Apple is also reportedly working on a chip for AI servers, aiming to enhance its on-device AI capabilities. With the launch of Apple Intelligence, the company has already introduced features such as smart notification summaries, email rewriting, and integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. These new chips will likely power these capabilities, bringing more advanced AI to its devices without relying on external servers.
The company isn’t stopping with smart glasses and AI servers. Apple is reportedly working on next-generation Mac processors. These are codenamed M6 and M7, which could power future MacBooks. Most likely, these chips will bring better raw power than the current M-series and may introduce new AI features as well.
The first ever Apple glasses could launch in 2027 and are expected to be powered by this new chip, bringing a variety of features, possibly including Augmented Reality (AR) capabilities in a sleek and stylish form factor.
