A Google Pixel 6a user has shared a rather frightening incident where the device caught fire while left charging overnight. This has raised fresh concerns about battery safety in older phones. According to the post, the Pixel 6a was placed just 40 centimetres from the user’s head. It reportedly exploded with a loud pop, releasing smoke and setting fire to a nearby bedsheet. The user inhaled smoke in the closed room and reported throat discomfort that lasted throughout the day. news Also Read: Google's Circle to Search AI feature is coming to more phones

Incident Highlights Battery Risk

The incident took place on July 26, according to the user’s Reddit post. He described how he quickly grabbed the burning phone by the charging cable and flung it onto the tiled floor to stop the fire from spreading. Photos shared online show a badly burned Pixel 6a, heat marks on nearby objects, and melted fabric where the phone had been resting. The user called the experience “terrible” and said he was unsure how to reach Google’s customer support by email. news Also Read: Google Pixel 7a vs Pixel 6a: What’s different, what’s same?

Battery Update Under Scrutiny

The fire incident comes shortly after Google released a mandatory software update on July 8 for Pixel 6a devices that have crossed 375–400 charging cycles. The update aimed to reduce battery performance to prevent any overheating or fire hazards. Users eligible for the update were also supposed to receive a free battery replacement offer.

However, some users now believe the update could be causing more harm than good. One social media user claimed his phone started overheating only after installing the update. Replacing the battery reportedly fixed the issue.

Third Fire Report in Recent Months

This is the third fire-related case involving a Pixel 6a reported online in recent months. In May, a similar incident was linked to a swollen battery. Several users have complained they received no warning about battery risk and lacked access to nearby walk-in repair centers.

Google has not issued any official comment on the latest incident. Pixel 6a users experiencing overheating, swelling, or rapid battery drain are advised to stop using the device immediately and seek professional help or a replacement.
