Google is deviating from its usual and typical schedule of releasing operating system and planning to release Android 16 earlier than usual. After the company unveiled the stable version of the Android 15 in October, the tech giant has shared the expected release timeline of the upcoming Android 16. Nevertheless, the company has made available the first preview of the Android 16 in November, following the second preview in December.
Before the official roll out, let’s check out the upcoming Android 16 update along with several other announcements from the tech giant in May 2025. Google’s commitment to release the upcoming OS earlier is part of the company’s taking a step ahead in faster innovation in apps and devices.
The early release timeline for Android 16 also suggests that the company will not follow its own rules in terms of what it did with the Pixel 9 series. The Pixel 9 series was launched with the Android 14 even though Android 15 was already available. Which means, the tech giant will launch the Pixel 10 series with Android 16 right from the start. The codename for Android 16 is ‘Baklava’, which is a desert themed name and it a tradition for Google’s Android version.
The company usually launches the stable version of its Android OS in the third quarter of the year. However, this time, as per the official timeline of the Android Developer Program, the Android 16 stable version will be rolled out in May 2025. The early release from Google basically coincides with company’s annual I/O Developer Conference. Google’s annual I/O Developer Conference event typically showcases new Android features, updates to Maps, YouTube, Gmail, and more.
